Gunmen held 35 hostage at Intercontinental Hotel Rio:

This is the hotel that many HAL passengers on Veendam stayed at prior to embarking on our Rio to NYC cruise in Spring 2010. This also the hotel that many air passengers stay at after the Atlanta to Rio flights!

This hotel's location sounds so much like the hotel that we stayed at way back quite a few years ago when we arrived in Rio -- we stayed at the Sherraton. Don;t know if it is the same hotel -- it was right next to the slums as well.
