Rental car in Freeport...is it safe?

There are absolutely things to do in Freeport! Right off the ship is very industrial. There are a couple of shops, but not much. We did an excursion through the ship because we weren't sure what to do. Our bus driver spoke somewhat jokingly about how crazy people drive there and advised us not to rent a car in the Bahamas as it's a major risk. But our excursion left from Our Lucaya. You can hop in a taxi right off the ship for about $5 per person each way. If you go to Our Lucaya there are shops, restaurants, beach, hotels/resorts and lots to do! If we ever went back to Freeport we would probably just hop in a taxi and go there instead of planning anything specific. The taxis are small vans so you will likely be with people you do not know from your ship or other ships as well, but there is someone there organizing it all to make sure people get in taxis efficiently. I'd suggest just getting in a taxi and heading to Our Lucaya instead of renting a car! I would hate to hear about anyone getting hurt or in a sticky situation if anything did happen.

We had transportation arranged through our excursion, but it seemed just as easy to get a taxi back. Others we spoke to said it was quite easy as well! Everyone in Our Lucaya was quite friendly and helpful (we were able to spend some time there after our excursion before we went back to the ship) so if you aren't sure I'm sure someone would be more than happy to help you! Hope you have fun!

I just returned from Freeport and Nassau. Unless you book an excursion with the cruise ship don't bother to get off the ship in Freeport. As far as renting a car I would not even attempt it especially with kids. They drive on the opposite side of the road and it can get veru confusing to navigate the way the traffic is flowing. Lucaya is nothing but a tourist trap with pushy vendors and the casino was a dump. Save your energy and money for Nassau.
