save on parking while staying in FLL

Can anyone help us with some info on parking in the Fort Lauderdale beach-area or downtown.

We are flying to Fort Lauderdale in januari from the Netherlands and plan to stay 5 nights in Fort Lauderdale before we cruise from the Port of Miami.

We are renting a car for the 5 days. Most hotels in Fort Lauderdale beach-area offer (valet-)parking for $20+ per day. Is there a way we can park the rental-car maybe a few blocks from the hotels (we do not mind to walk a few blocks to get to our car) and save some money ?

Public parking by the beach and downtown areas is metered or in pay lots that close overnight, so I doubt that you can find anything less than $20/day. Some hotels charge $30/day.
