Cozumel

Hello, we have never been to Cozumel and wanted to get some advice on what to do there. Is the main part of Cozumel within walking distance of the port, is this city easy to get around on your own or is it better to do a city/shopping tour for part of the day? Also what and where are some of the better beaches in Cozumel.
