For my mum

must she wear her tennis shoes to use the gym, treadmill etc? She's be just as happy wearing her sturdy sandals if there is no rule.

No she can wear as well her Manolo High Heels!

Propper GYM WEAR is reuqired in the gym! It is not a beach hut!

She should be wearing closed toe shoes for safety in the gym. If a heavy weight were dropped on her bare toes it could be a nasty injury. :(

Now, having said that - I was in the gym once and a dancer was barefoot next to me on an elliptical. The attendant, her friend, told her it was policy to have shoes on so the dancer put on her flip-flops and kept working out.

No policy against sandals AFAIK but it would probably be in your mom's best interest to wear closed shoes to avoid potential injuries or even something like athlete's foot if her skin happened to touch the floor/equipment.

It won't matter if she has closed toed shoes on if a heavy weight is dropped on her foot. It's gonna probably break something.

That said - I agree, athletic shoes should be used in the gym.
