Just interested in your comments,

Given the avalanche of new superliners lately, how long do you think ships like the Spirit can viably be sailing under the Carnival banner in the US before being handed down to other cruise lines in the group?

tough one.....a hundred years?????? I don't know. Some of the better ships are the older ones.

When does a hotel become too old to stay in? Ships are not much more than floating hotels, except that they get much better upkeep. Certainly 30 years is not old and probably 50 is OK. 10 years is brand new.

You are correct about Baltimore. But the Triumph, Victory, and Glory have all sailed from Charleston. So the Charleston port can handle a bigger ship, but it doesn't mean the passenger base is there to support a larger ship year round.

The passenger base in Charleston is as large as Miami. By sailing out of Charleston you more than quadruple the number of people that can drive to the port in six hours. If Charleston wanted to it could host as many cruises as Miami and do just as well.
