Travelex NO vs. Travel Guard YES

Recommended Posts

Realizing that everyone’s experience with a particular insurance carrier is different (some great, some horrible) I at least want to share our recent journey.

Traveling with another party, they insured with Travel Guard and we selected Travelex. Because of a weather delayed flight, we missed our connecting flight to Europe and the carrier CANCELLED our remaining tickets, considering us a no-show (Yes, you read that correctly).

The out of pocket cost to purchase 3 last-minute tickets was $7,500. (Yes, you read that correctly too)

When we returned from our trip we filed our claim as did our companions. Theirs was paid in full by Travel Guard within 30 days and ours (with Travelex) was denied in full.

After 3 months of persistence and frustration, they agreed to only pay about 20% of the loss, processing it as a trip DELAY rather than trip CANCELLATION.

We contacted an attorney who pursued it but was denied any further payment from Travelex.

We then filed a claim with our state’s department of insurance and rather quickly, the balance was paid in full.

Very disheartening that it took 6 months to bring this to closure.

Yesterday I read an article that reports our department of insurance was able to recover $10.5 million in claims for policyholders last year alone.

We will insure with Travel Guard in the future.
