ekerr19 Posted March 3, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 3, 2005 oh, you haven't seen anything! These are on eBay pretty frequently, but LOL, can't imagine why anyone would want to bid on them!
jaguarstyper Posted March 3, 2005 #3 Share Posted March 3, 2005 A friend of mine collects casino chips and has chips from hundreds of casinos around the world. He always asks us to bring home chips when our travels bring us near a casino. I know for a fact that he has bought chips through Ebay. People collect the damndest things. I never cease to be amazed at some of the things people list on Ebay. I have found some seriously wierd things for our gameroom on Ebay. jaguarstyper Posted March 7, 2005 #7 Share Posted March 7, 2005 I was at my friend's house (the one who collects chips) and he said a chip from a currently operating cruiseship would normally be worth about 25% of its face value to a collector. He said sometimes they go higher on ebay because there are people out there that just want them, regardless of what they are worth. He showed me some that he has paid over $300 each for. Several from Havana casinos, and a couple from obscure Vegas casinos in the 1950s. The chips were used only for dignitaries and other VIPs are very nicely decorated. This is what makes them valuable. He claimes his casino chip collection is worth over $30,000. He has less than $8,000 invested. Still seem silly? Tim
smoosh21 Posted March 7, 2005 #8 Share Posted March 7, 2005 These kinds of collections always seem silly to me, unless you are collecting for the pure joy and not as an investment. Its like a few years ago when people were spending $50 and up for certain Beanie Babies. You have to wonder how many of them actually retired on their Beanie Baby pension funds. While I agree that as a collector I might pay a premium for something, I would probably rather do the collecting in person. :) Of course thats a lot more expensive than paying $1.5 for a single poker chip
