Puerto Vallarta Mexico

My husband I are were just in Puerto Vallarta for a short vacation. We were very surprized to find the downtown area of PV so handicapped accessible for wheelchair users.

We were told PV's undertaking is very recent, but most of the sidewalks are all newly ramped for ease of wheelchair users. We saw quite a few people out and about in wheelchairs. There were many designated handicapped parking spaces available.

There is a very cute hotel on the beach called Hotel Playa Los Arcos which has a nice palapa beach bar/restaurant along with an up scale restaurant named Cafe Kaiser Maximillian. Next door is also a a nice espresso bar along with ice cream treats. All of these are quite accessible for wheelchair users.

We stayed outside of Puerto Vallarta in an area called Punta Mita to the north. The condo was at a development of condos called Punta Vista. The condos would be very managable for someone in a wheelchair. There are elevators with a ramp to it from the front. These condos are directly on the beach along with a pool. We saw a family with 3 disabled children using the pool.

We came across an area in Nuevo Vallarta called Paradise Village with mall, restaurants, etc. All handicapped accessible.

The cruise ship dock has many shops and restaurants next to it.

We discovered a company in Puerto Vallarta called Mexico Accessible that has vans with lifts for rent.

PV has done a lot, but I would not consider their curb cuts in the shopping area along the malecon all that great. They are VERY steep and many of the shops along this area still have 1-3 steps to get inside. It is some progress though. Can you now get onto the malecon itself? We were told this was in progress when there two years ago.

Accessible Mexico has one wheelchair accessible van, but also rents out a wheelchair accessible condo and has beach chairs, lifts and commode chairs for rent. We used them for a very nice tour and lunch on our last visit to PV. You can reach them at http://www.accesiblemexico.com/index.shtml They hope to be able to eventually expand to other ports such as Cabo or Mazatlan, but are not there yet.
