Blue Lagoon Dolphin Swim-Via Excursion or on Own

For those in the know, what are the advantages and disadvantages of booking the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Swim on our own vs the Excursion? The price difference doesn't appear to be much. And I would like to spend some time utilzing the beach areas as well-will one method (Excursion vs our Own) be more conducive for this? Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

We haven't sailed yet but I've done a lot of reading of the boards. Depending on what ship you sail on and what day of the week you'll be in Nassau, the beach is apparently closed on I think Sundays and Thursdays to all but cruise passengers. So if you book directly you would not be able to use the beach. That is my understanding anyway. We are booking their sea lion encounter directly as Carnival doesn't offer it.
