Beware of San Juan taxi drivers from Port to SJU

We just got off the Summit last Saturday, had a great cruise, but got ripped off both times by San Juan taxi drivers.

We had no issues with being ripped off, however the drivers do drive like maniacs!!!

They go 15 to 20 over the speed limit and weave in and out of traffic. A seatbelt is also a foreign concept to a PR cab driver.

Ask before you get in the taxi for the fare. Keep the fare guide handy. Do not get in unless you know the exact fare before hand. Common sense applies.

When we arrived at SJU for our recent cruise, the taxi stand gave us a rate sheet which we kept with us. Rates to all major areas are listed (and yes, the 50 cent surcharge was stamped on it) Found this page, and the rates are the same as on our rate chart...

Hi Folks -

WOW - kind of disturbed by some of the comments regarding the taxi drivers in SJR- if this is a US territory - why are these people (some cab drivers) acting like described? Are there no regulations on these drivers? How do folks like us (vacationers) insure we receive honest service? I would just hate to go there and distrust the very person that is responsible for getting us to the beginning of our most valued vacation....

We just returned from a cruise and took a taxi from the Panamerican Cruise Terminal to San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport or Aeropuerto Internacional de Luis Muñoz Marín (SJU).

 

Our cost was $26.00

 

The breakdown was as follows:

 

Zone 1 = $19.00

Gas Surcharge = $2.00

Luggage = $5.00 ($1.00 per bag, note that this includes "carry on")

 

Total $26.00

 

15% tip =$4.00

 

Total from Cruise Terminal to Airport = $30.00

 

This was in a large van. Driver was fine, no problems noted.

We will be staying at this hotel on April 30 of this year pre cruise for 1 night. We have always stayed at the Embassy Suites in Isla Verde. But since we arrive at 10pm and this hotel is less expensive we decided to try this one out. Have you ever stayed at this hotel before?

 

We stayed at the Hotel Miramar on our last cruise. The rooms were very nice, the staff is wonderful. There was no on-site eatery, but there were MANY restaurants in the next two blocks. Everything from pizza and tacos to upscale fare. Also there is a grocery store one block away. We would stay there again for a cruise.
