cockleshell/banana beach vs. nevis

We're sailing 11/20/11 on the Carnival Victory. We're doing a lot of excursions at some of the other ports which are spendy so we're thinking of trying to go it on our own in St. Kitts. Had originally planned on booking an excursion to Nevis through the ship, but it's again-expensive. Is it feasible for cruisers to take the ferry there and go to Pinney's Beach??

Our other thought-is it worth it to go to Nevis or are beaches such as Cockleshell or Banana just as nice. I noticed though it is quite spendy also to take a taxi to these beaches, but would be about 1/4 price of doing an excursion through Carnival.

We definitely like the beach and water. Not into taking walking or scenic tours. We do these cruises for the gorgeous water and beach experiences.

Thanks for the advice ahead of time!
