A cruise excursion, private tour or DIY?

The CC port reviews are helpful for learning about various ports...here's the link for the one for Crete.

We went to Knossos by taxi and returned by local bus, then explored the town and stopped in at the Archaeological Museum (a combined ticket with Knossos).

Susan, where is the Archaeological Museum in relation to the town and/or port? I'm on an included excursion to Knossos but not the museum -- however, we have free time afterwards in town.

Hi Cynthia,

It's fairly close to the port. When we came back by bus, we explored the town on foot - the market, the lions fountain (Morosini Fountain), Venetian Loggia, the museum and the fort at the port ... all easily walkable. It's a busier city (traffic wise) than I had anticipated, but with a map, it's not too difficult to get your bearings.

Here's a map that should help (use the N, S, W, E, arrows at the top to move around the map.) The museum is at the far right, close to the top of the map.

The museum has been under renovation for years ... with only a small section in the basement housing some artifacts, which is open to the public. Here's an update from TA on the progress.

Your tour ticket may be just for Knossos, but if so, then the entrance fee will probably only be a few euros for the archaeological museum (if it's just the temporary exhibit.)

You're welcome:) Have a great trip! Are you doing a post cruise stay on Cyprus?

Susan

No, I was there last year (went to Kourion) and this year we have an overnight there before the cruise ends. I hope to get to Paphos this time around.

Yes ... worth the time and effort to see the mosaics!

Back to the OT, here's a link that I had bookmarked for Heraklion ... if you are at the Venetian Loggia in your free time, be sure to have a look inside.
