Hi. My hubby and I planned to bring our own snorkle equipment, but I dont have fins. Can you rent them only? We are going on the Dawn to Bahamas.
Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda
I have asked a similar question in another thread and got some great responses! Check it out, it's called "Snorkel Question". It might be on page 2 now.

yes you can its $10.00 per day for the fins(which includes a mandatory vest that everyone must wear) The vest is free if that is all you need. This is for Styrup cay . Enjoy it we loved the private Island...

Tigerkiss,
If you want to see LOTS of fish at Great Stirrup Cay, go to the spot "between the rocks". You will know the spot I am talking about as soon as you get there. Try to get on one of the first tenders so you can get a good spot on the beach (or at a picnic table in the shade with a hammock). Also, if you want to have hundreds of fish following you around, bring a can of Cheez Whiz. When you squirt it in the water, the fish all love it. And if you hold the can at the end, the fish will nibble on the nozzle to try to get some more cheese. We got some great pictures this way! I would also recommend the Sea Island Adventure in Nassau for snorkeling. It was a beautiful beach with a terrific snorkeling site, it had different kinds of fish than Great Stirrup Cay, and was much less crowded.
Have a great time!

For tigerkiss...
My husband and I just returned (5/02) and had the absolute best time snorkeling in both Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay. I have to "ditto" the above remarks and statements. The waters are crystal clear and you will see many fish...different ones at each place. We chose the ATHOL ISLAND SNORKEL in Nassau. The "Dive-In Adventure" crew from the DAWN teamed up with a boat in Nassau that took us out near ATHOL ISLAND. The boat has steps on the stern, so you can get into the water easily. We received what equipment we needed aboard the DAWN (meeting on Deck 12 at the "Dive In Locker") prior to getting off the ship, walking down the pier and getting on the excursion boat. I have my own prescription lens mask & snorkel tube, so all I needed were snorkel fins and snorkel vest from the DAWN. My husband got all his equipment on the DAWN.

After we boarded the excursion boat, we received a narrated "tour" about Nassau as we sailed to the ATHOL ISLAND. During this time, we applied sunscreen lotion, listened to the snorkel safety instructions, prepared our equipment and enjoyed the view. The "Dive In" crew was extremely conscientious about safety and their instructions were consise and clear for the beginners. They assisted anyone that needed help. We were very impressed with them. The snorkel site was awesome. DON'T FORGET YOUR UNDERWATER CAMERAS! Unlike other snorkel excursions we've taken with other cruise ships, the time that was allowed to us at ATHOL ISLAND was lengthy. My husband and I actually "tired" out before we were called back to the boat...this was a first for us...usually we wish we had MORE time.

The only differences we saw between the Bahama snorkel locations and the Bermuda locations we've gone to on other cruises were the differences in the coral and fish. We found the fish to be more colorful in the Bahamas and the coral to be more colorful in Bermuda...both locations are great to snorkel in.

Prior to our snorkel experiences on Great Stirrup Cay, we had only gone into the water off an excursion boat. Great Stirrup Cay afforded us the opportunity to "stroll" into the water directly from the beach. The equipment rental was $10 for fins, $25 for the entire package...obtained from a small building near the snorkel beach area. Safety vests are manditory and if you have all your own equipment, the vests are no charge. The rental fees are for the entire time you are on the private island...but need to be returned to the snorkel shack 1 hour before leaving the private island.

We found that we liked snorkeling from a boat better than "walking" into the water. "Walking" into the water is a bit difficult with the waves and sandy bottom in fins. We found it easier to walk backwards until we got into deeper water. One real treat at the private island was seeing the "resident" stingrays-Bert & Ernie. If someone hadn't told us one was there, as we "walked" into the water, we would have stepped on "him" as he looked more like a large rock laying on the bottom. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for one of the "Dive-In" instructors giving a "snorkel tour" while you are there. The "resident" fish seem to "flock" to them when they are in the water and it is a great opportunity to take some wonderful pictures of schools of fish. It is a humbling feeling floating at the top of the water and trying to remain still...the fish have no fear of you and you feel like a special guest in their watery world. Enjoy your upcoming cruise and snorkel experiences!
