English in New Caledonia and Vanuata?

Hi all. Do not yell at me for also posting this on P&O :) I am planning a cruise for me and my elderly mom. She does not speak French and is worried about communicating. My French is pretty much non-existent which really doesn't bother me, but she gets nervous. So, can us uni-lingual Yanks get by without the ability to speak French?

Sure - why not?? - we uni-lingual Aussies do it all the time. No problem in Vanuatu as English is widely spoken there. It is handy to have some common words of French in New Caledonia. The next time we go to any of the French speaking places in the SP, I am going to attempt to learn some words of the local Kanak language. From what we recently observed in the SP, that would go down VERY well with the locals.
