St. Thomas cruise tour to St. John on Allure of the Seas

We are going to be on the Allure in February and want to go to St. John for the day. Has any one done the all-day shopping excursion to St. John? If so, can you tell me whether you take a private ferry right from the cruise ship over to the island or do they transport everyone to the commercial ferry? The website descriptions are a bit misleading.

You can take public transportation (taxi/ferry), private operator excursions, or transportation booked through your ships excursions desk.

For public transport taxi to Charlotte Amalie and ferry from there to Cruz Bay, St John, or taxi to Red Hook and ferry from there to Cruz Bay. Red Hook is a much chorter ferry time. Or you will see exscursions offered through the ship using taxis and ferries at a higher cost, as well as private operators with group excursions to take a day sail to STJ.

There is some nice shopping in Cruz Bay and that is a great place to purchase a hook bracelet. But the duty free and other major shopping is in CA, St Thomas.

Not sure if that helps?
