Boat rental?

Anyone rented a boat while visiting St. Maarten? I would be curious to know if you got a captain or not & how you spent your time. Were the waters rough? We have never been to St. Maarten but have only heard that the traffic is terrible. Wondering if boating around would be a good option for our family of 4? We are boaters at home; not sure what it would be like here....The company I'm looking at offers 2 options....a smaller boat to get around "the bay" & a larger one that allows you to go out into the ocean & fish, etc.
