Hotels near IAH Airport or Decent Area?

After researching Hotels in the Galvenston area (limited availability-pricing), since we get into Houston around 6pm on March 31st, and our Cruise does not depart until 4pm on April 1st, we may just stay the night in Houston and shuttle to Galvenston the next day. I know folks have mentioned that the area near the Airport is a bit sketchy, so I have a few questions.

 

Is their a preferred area I should be searching for hotels a bit farther away? I do not want to get too far away as it is just another "load up a van/taxi" to take me somewhere?

 

Just trying to cover my bases....
