hotels in Nuremburg before river cruise

Does anyone have a suggestion for an overnight hotel stay, near the port, in Nuremberg?

We are looking into flying to Brussels for a few days before the cruise. Then flying or taking the train to Nuremburg to embark on the Viking Freya for a Dec. 9th cruise to Budapest. How difficult would this be?? How expensive would this be????

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express inside the old city wall and it was very nice and reasonably priced. Lots of places to walk to and explore within easy reach. We had a car, but it stayed parked the two days we were there. The subway station is within easy walk of this hotel.

We have done a couple of Christmas cruises out of Nuremberg and highly recommend the Sheraton Carlton. It is not near the port, (there are really no hotels "close" to the port) however it is a EASY walk from the main train station (less than 2 city blocks). We found the service simply outstanding. The hotel itself is very good but the staff and food make it special. Price seemed reasonable.

Getting a cab to the port is very easy and staying in town makes seeing the city and the christmas market a snap.

thanks, we will check it out. when did you go to Nuremburg?

We were in Nuremburg April 13th and 14th, 2012, less than a month ago. The price of the Holiday Inn was 79 eruos a night for senior rate without breakfast, which is really inexpensive compared to many other hotels. We noticed without the senior rate you were charged for the second person in the room....a practice I guess is common in Europe so be careful when you book to read the details. We walked a couple of blocks to a great local bakery cafe for breakfast. There was an outdoor market across the street from the bakery where we bought fruit. Much of the area is pedestrian only and easy to walk to see the sights. The hotel service was very good and the rooms very comfortable. We did not use their restaurant but found two great ones inthe area we toured for both our evening meals. We walked to and toured the castle and visited the marketplace and other sites along the way.

The Holiday Inn during December is above 200. euros. And they charge 25.euros for the second person. I guess that's the way it is... We will try the senior rate.

Tripadvisor rates the Holiday Inn pretty high.

Thanks

There was quite a difference in price for seniors and regular rates so be sure to try that. Yes, I read the reviews on trip advisor before we went also. There was one comment about it being in the red light district that said just be sure to go left when you leave the hotel and not right. We saw no activity that resembled a red light district. It was a great find, location, and price. Our relative who lives near Nuremberg was very pleased when he went to check it out for us before we booked. He is now going to recommend it to other visitors.

If you have airline miles or any affinity program (amex points, Holiday inn points, Hilton honors, Starwood preferred guest and similar) sometimes you can get a deal. We stayed at the Sheraton there in Nuremberg for $60/night for 2 people using Starwood (SPG) points plus money program.

If you are arriving by train, The Sheraton is literally 2 blocks away, an easy walk even with bags and questionable weather.

AAA or senior rates are a good idea too.
