montanarose12 Posted July 10, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 10, 2012 We're sailing Copenhagen/Stockholm aboard the Voyager in a couple of weeks and, now that we've hit the Silver level, we'll get free internet and WiFi (hooray!). I have the TruPhone app on my iPhone, which lets you make el cheapo phone calls if you can connect to a WiFi network. Unlike Skype, it's just phone service; no video component. But I've read some comments elsewhere saying that Regent blocks phone calls from any phones other than their own. I'm hoping someone here has experience with TruPhone -- especially on the Voyager, although I imagine all three ships are pretty similar -- and can clue me in. Thanks in advance for any info! kvisf Posted July 10, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 10, 2012 At Silver, I believe you still also get an hour of complimentary satellite phone usage, so you can just pick up the handset in your suite. As I recall, in some locations in the Med and Black Sea I was also able to get cell service at sea on my iPhone last summer, and for sure was able to use the iPad to do FaceTime videoconference with our kids over the ship's wifi (although the Internet connection was slow and the video a bit jerky, it still worked)
ginny123 Posted July 11, 2012 #3 Share Posted July 11, 2012 Don't know about TruPhone but we used Magicjack for the same purpose in December '11 with no problem. We were told by the internet guy onboard that Regent does not block that type phone service via the internet. We did not find the connection to be any worse than when using the phone in our suite for calls ashore, although I assume you will almost always get a better connection while in port rather than out at sea.
