chiggazred Posted July 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 17, 2012 Can anyone list some local dishes one must eat when they visit San Juan and where you think its the best place to eat it...
lah66 Posted July 17, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 17, 2012 Mofongo from Barrachinas (make sure to have their fantastic pina collada too, even if you are not a coconut fan, you will love them!). Their paella is good too but the Mofongo is the absolute best.... Mallorcas (egg, ham and cheese) and freshly squeezed OJ from La Bonbonera (Most likely they are still closed, but I hear LaMallorca is supposed to be good too, though we had an awful experience there!) Any Lechonera in Cayey....we stopped at Los Pinos and had a great roasted pork meal....nobody speaks English but that is half the fun...a true Puerto Rican cultural experience... Try the shaved ice with coconut milk from the little stand that is located just outside El Morro...I know it has a name, but cannot remember it now...so refreshing on a hot day!! lah66 Posted July 18, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 18, 2012 Oops...yes, Cafe Mallorca...sorry about that...we have heard good things about the place but our mallorcas were burned and they never did bring us coffee...we should have complained but that is hard to do when with the language barrier...some people insist it is their favorite, so we think it was just a bad day that we were there...enjoy

lah66 Posted July 19, 2012 #6 Share Posted July 19, 2012 Not sure if you are asking if we ate more at Cafe Mallorca (that answer is no) or if we ate more in Old San Juan..other than two dinners at Barrachinas and Mallorcas at LaBonbonera and Cafe Mallorca, we had lunch at Old Harbor Brewery..food was pretty good...we had a shrimp dish and a burger...and the beer was fantastic. I do not think we would eat there again but we really wanted to try the beer and we were hungry at the time so it was convenient! There are tons of great reviews of restaurants (easy to find on tripadvisor) in Old San Juan. hope that helps...
dfb Posted July 19, 2012 #7 Share Posted July 19, 2012 I second Cafe Mallorca and recommend El Jibarito for lunch. Blog entries for our trips to those places below, each has a slide show. http://circle-south-america-2008-aboard.blogspot.com/2008/03/day-58-march-1-2008-san-juan-puerto.html http://rsscdiamondsanjuanrt22005.blogspot.com/2005/02/good-start.html http://rsscdiamondsanjuanrt22005.blogspot.com/2005/02/lunch-time-and-finding-diamond.html
dawnmariex Posted July 20, 2012 #8 Share Posted July 20, 2012 Trifongo at Fifo's Deli and Tapas on Calle Tanca 203. It's rated 38 out of 406 on tripadvisor. Get it with shrimp! Prices are reasonable here and they are super helpful.
