Crossing the border from Aqaba to Eilat

Hi, folks. A port of call next month is Aqaba - we've already been to Petra, Dead Sea & Wadi Rum, & would like to visit Eilat. The theory is taxi to the border, walk across the border, taxi into Eilat. Anyone done that? Any problems / delays etc? Will we need any shekels or will we get by with euros? Also, we have the choice of afternoon/evening, or next day with a sailing late afternoon. Any thoughts on which day?
