Was just wondering if our ship departs at 5pm, how early can we board?

Do you get lunch or should we grab something snackie at the Airport?

The ship may leave at 5 p.m. but our cruise experience always starts at about noon. Since we live in Florida we just drive to the port and arrive about 11:30. Depending on the cruise line embarkation usually starts about noon and they have lunch already to be served. It adds hours onto your cruise and it's a very nice way to relax and get ready to sail. You can explore most of the ships and even find your cabin, Holland American is the only line we've been on that keeps you in one place until they announce the cabins are ready, but they offer lunch while you're waiting.
