LewLew Posted April 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2004 I want to go on the stingray tour but I am scared to death of sharks. Should this even be an issue?
reefexplorer Posted April 12, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2004 stingrays are in the shark family I have scuba dived with sharks and they are awesome. Usually you don't even see them. As soon as they see you they high tail out. They actually are more afraid of you than you are of them. There have only been 52 fatal attacks in the united states since 1670 (yes the year 1670!!!!) according the international shark attack files. that includes Florida where people are constantly surfing in shark infested waters and people swimming in the ocean with seals (great white sharks favorite food) and people chumming for sharks and catching them on a line while standing in the water with them. There are more people killed by pet dogs in a single year than recorded deaths in the history of the USA. You really don't have to worry about sharks on the stingray tours, but with all the media attention and scary movies it can be quite discerting. We will be doing the stingray thing in about a month can hardly wait. Here is a website that might interest you.http://www.oceanstar.com/shark/ Hope you experience the stingray tour. keysjohnson Posted April 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Also, Stingray City is all sand. There are no rocks, reefs or grass and sharks don't generally like to be out in the wide open like that. That's not where their food tends to be. The stingray tour is awesome and not to be missed. With all the activity, boats and people around, the chances of a shark being in the area are very slim. It could happen, but it's generally nurse sharks and they kind of look like big ole' catfish. My husband and I have been SCUBA divers for years, and we lived the the Florida Keys. We saw lots of sharks but as the above poster said, they take off as soon as they see you. One thing we learned in dive class is they do not like the bubbles that divers make. So go, have fun, don't stress. It's a wonderful experience.
