Yes, Hertz is the only vendor in Seward.

Your only other options are cruise transfer, Park Connection Bus, Seward Busline, Alaska Railroad, and a few private transfer companies.

If you want recommendations for a private transfer you'll have better success if you post on the ALASKA forum.

 

I'd say that a rental car is the 'best' option. It gives you the ability to sightsee along the way. The drive along the Turnagain Arm offers lots of interesting stopping points ... Wildlife Conservation Center, Potters Marsh, gold panning at indian valley.

The train ride between Anchorage and Seward has breathtaking scenery! Seward is so small you can walk most places and they have 2 taxi cabs that will take you literally anywhere for five bucks for everyone in the cab! Mike's taxi picked us up at the train station and took us everywhere including over to catch our cruise in Whittier! Even picked us up at 5:30 AM when we went salmon fishing
