Mark707 Posted May 17, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2013 Hi again, We are doing our first ever cruise in late june and call at ..... Cagliari , Naples , Rome , Villefranche , Mahon. What I would like to know is can you get off at these places and walk into the town ? Having never been before we can't picture where the boat moors up etc. I know Rome is quite a way in land and we are not really that fussed about going there but are the other places close by and if we skipped Rome is there anywhere else to have a look at ? Me and Mrs M are not really ones for excursions and usually like to find our own way around places :)
jenny wren Posted May 17, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2013 Hi there Mark...can't help with Villefranche as we haven't been there but Cagliari...there is a bus to take you to the port entrance and then the town is literally across the busy dual carriageway. Its quite hilly here. Reception do very good maps of each port if you go down the night before you dock they should just be on the counter. Not sure what there is to see in Naples itself but you can walk in...the cruise terminal has quite a few shops, you can get a train to Sorrento or a boat there and also Capri goes from the next little harbour area. The train also goes to Pompeii and Herculaneum. The port for Rome is Civitavecchia and if you don't fancy going to Rome then get a shuttle to the port entrance and the town is there....there is a nice seafront beach and small harbour but if you turn inland and walk up the hill you will find shops and a market down one of the side streets on the left. Don't miss the sail in to Mahon it's lovely....the ship docks right in town but you have to walk up 113 steps to get to it!! If you can't manage that there will be stalls on the quayside and you can actually walk on the level (to the left when you disembark) for quite a long way...not sure what there is to see though! We found the excursion desk are very helpful if you want to do your own thing so don't be frightened to ask their suggestions. Hope this helps :)
Rebel Rouser Posted May 18, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2013 Morning Mark, Villfranche is by tender and a very pretty and colourful little town with a street market and streets less than 2 mins off the tender.
