Everything Breakaway Review – May 26, 2013 Sailing

What follows is an account of our vacation during the week of May 26th on the NCL Breakaway. As a serial lurker on these boards I felt it was time to give back and help others who like me are research hounds looking for reviews that help them decide whether to take this cruise and some details surrounding the experience.

As a research hound I’d been on the “Everything Breakaway” and related boards for the last few months watching and waiting for the arrival of this ship. As well as scrounging around for any morsel of information that I could find on the ship once she was floated out for the first time.

Now that we’ve had a chance to sail I do have some opinions about the ship and the overall experience. Some of them good, some not so good; which you’ll find peppered throughout. That said, right off the top I’ll tell you that we definitely plan to sail this ship again. We had a wonderful time and will work it back into our cruising schedule in the future.

I’ve written this review in sections so that you can skip around and read the parts that you are most interested in. I’d be happy to answer any questions that you have about our experiences.

So here we go, let’s start with a little background. After all, it isn’t much of a tale without a backstory is it?

Background

So who are we? We are a couple that loves to cruise and have just decided to go ahead and embrace it. Actually, I’ve decided to go ahead and embrace it in spite of the funny looks I get from those that just don’t get the need to cruise.

My other half and I have been on about ten cruises between us and were anxious to try a brand new ship. I’ve forgiven him for being a bit of a Carnival disciple and think I’ve appropriately reformed him, but I digress.

Being type A’s we researched and researched and researched this ship hanging on every post and blog leading up to this trip. We debated the debates about balconettes, loungers, M6’s, should we have gone with the aft balcony? crowding and the waterfront.

So much so that we did almost no, well correction let’s be honest absolutely no research on Bermuda. All the interest we could muster was to arrange an island tour on day one; which for the record was a nice introduction to the island and not to be missed if like us you’ve never been to Bermuda before. This as you will see later was a no-no as first time visitors to the island of Bermuda. We essentially lived there for three days with no real clue about where to go or what to do flying by the seat of our pants. But then again, that turned out to be part of the fun.

One last thing before we jump into the details here. There’s been a lot of back and forth about the inaugural season and whether or not NCL has done or should have done anything special for customers. The answer for us was no they didn’t do anything special. There were items in the gift shop that touted the inaugural season. While I did see a few of those tote bags that I’d read about earlier they were not widely distributed. I’m guessing that they may have been given to platinum latitudes members. I would mention here that on previous RCI cruises I received tote bags as a Crown and Anchor member just for showing up.

No judgments. Just an observation.

Let’s begin shall we?

Overall Impressions

This ship is simply beautiful and though large surprisingly easy to navigate and get yourself from one side of the ship to the other and from one venue to the next. This was especially true if you are willing and able to take the stairs versus the elevators. Having said that when we did take the elevators we rarely had to wait long before they came along.

The ship’s décor as you’ve no doubt seen from other posts here reminds me of a high-end hotel. In fact, it’s the type of classic styling that should hold up well over the years and not look dated at any time in the near future.

There is something to do for everyone; so much so that I couldn’t keep up. For instance, I enjoy listening to different musical performers around the ship and didn’t manage to get all of them in. My other half missed the rope course and only had a chance to do the slides once.

I simply gave up and lounged around our balcony and went with some down time instead while he went down the slides and explored the ship.

Ocean Place 678 is a nice concept connecting most of the public spaces making everything easy to find and creating a communal atmosphere. We didn’t make much use of the Waterfront or pool deck since we decided to go with the Haven accommodations on this trip (more on that below).

I’m told that the ship was at or near full capacity on this voyage yet with the few exceptions I’ll mention below, it never really felt overcrowded. My other half tells me that on one of his walks when I was back at the room resting from too much to do on the balcony that the pool area was crowded with no seats to be had on a sea day.

Given this fact, my suggestion is that you take into consideration the time of year you decide to cruise this ship and the likelihood that she will be at capacity and then choose your room accordingly. You may want to go for a balcony cabin that gives you enough outdoor lounging that you won’t miss being topside if it gets crazy up there.

On the down side, I’ve got two annoyances that while not deal breakers were significantly annoying to us so I mention them here. First, I found it nearly impossible to have a quiet romantic dinner. We go to the upcharge restaurants to get away from the general hustle and bustle of the ship and found it difficult to have a quiet conversation. I found this to be particularly annoying at Le Bistro, so much so that we requested to have our table moved to cut down on some of the noise.

The other thing I’d note is that the as mentioned in other posts, the tables are at times too close together at these venues. So your dinner for two can quickly become dinner for four or more, especially if you have a chatty group next to you. You may or may not mind this but be prepared.

Last but not least and by far my biggest gripe is the fact that this cruise was not so freestyle. This was our fourth NCL cruise and it took a surprising amount of planning and moving things around to get the shows and dinner venues that we wanted. On our previous NCL cruises, we walked on board having a general idea where we might want to have dinner and typically reserved the same day or day before. The only exception to that rule was usually Tepanyakki.

Not so much this time. We worked hard for this vacation, especially when you throw in planning entertainment as well. Keep this in mind when you delve into the details of making your arrangements.

Pre-Cruise

While we are native New Yorkers we like to be close to our departure point the night before to avoid any issues on the day of. We stayed in the city on Saturday, taking in a dinner and a show beforehand putting us right into vacation mode. This is the second time we’ve done this and think it’s money well spent.

This time we stayed at the Fairfield Inn on 37th and paid for it with points. If you’ve never stayed in a city hotel before I must warn you that unless you’re in a studio your cruise cabin will likely be bigger or just as big. Prepare yourself.

As a side note we did see Wicked. If you haven’t seen it run, don’t walk to this show. Amazing!!

Embarkation

This process was a breeze. So much so that once they took our luggage we were through security and standing in the corkage fee line in no time. In the event that you are bringing wine aboard, the corkage fee is $15 per bottle. They take your bottles just on the other side of the security checkpoint at a table to the left.

The cruise line does not take your wines. Once, they charge you for bringing them on board you a free to take them to your room. My other half was quite miffed that they weren’t taken to a proper wine storage room.

We were staying in the Haven and were escorted into the private check-in area just inside the terminal. Check-in was a breeze and no sooner did we sit down than they were ready to escort us on board. In the event that you are traveling in an NCL suite for the first time, this area does have four agents checking you in and light beverages and snacks available if you’d like.

We were escorted by an Intercruise staff member up the gangway and to the elevator on deck four where Roy a butler in the Haven lead us upstairs and to the concierge desk where Ruth the concierge was waiting with instructions. Her chat was brief, giving us her and her staff’s hours; they are there from 8 – 8.

If you have scheduled a Cirque show, she will escort you down the back way to the Spiegel Tent in advance and you will be seated first. You’ll need to be at her desk 50 minutes in advance of the show time. We were told our rooms were ready and that lunch was available in the Haven restaurant. She also suggested that we make spa reservations if we were interested before doing anything else (more on that later).

Ruth does have two assistants on the desk, I mostly worked with Elvina and found her a pleasure and extremely sweet each time we interacted.

The Accommodations – Haven Room 16116 (S5)

Yes, we stayed in the Haven. Was it pricey, yes it was (more than I usually like to pay for a suite and I complained about this for months). But. Was it worth it? Oh yeah!!!

I pretty much stopped gripping the moment we walked into our room. Simply a beautiful space with more storage than I’ve ever seen in a cruise cabin before. In fact, I counted about 9 drawers in the room in addition to the closets and the storage space in our bathroom. Oh and don’t forget the shelf’s in the main area. You will not run out of storage space keeping in mind we were a party of two.

While it says that this room sleeps three, I would suggest that you keep it at two unless you are traveling with your child. Three adults in this space would get a little tight and you’d quickly run into privacy issues.

On to the balcony which came with two wicker chairs and a table and had more room than I expected. My other half quickly assessed the situation and asked that a lounger be bought in to give us a place to truly lounge.

Our request was met with no fuss and by the time we returned from exploring the ship it was in place. If your cabin crew suggests that you remove one of your wicker chairs to accommodate the lounger, don’t let them all four pieces fit nicely.

A word about our butler. We ran into Lani our butler on our last cruise that I absolutely loved and if you are getting her you are lucky. We however, were not. Lucky that is. Now. I have to stop here and say that my other half insisted that I take the name of our butler out of this post.

I have relented. However, let me say this if you read the previous paragraph closely and end up with this guy, you will know whom I mean. Wink, wink. My other half did however want me to note that our butler was elusive and nonexistent.

Back to the story, as some posters on other threads have mentioned when it comes to butlers sometimes you get ones that are absolutely wonderful and check-in on you daily, sometimes you don’t. Enough said.

While every time we asked for something the request was granted, it felt like he was basically doing his job and not a stitch more. Our cabin steward was Rene whom we’d also had on our last cruise and was wonderful.

Now, a few of the nits about the room. For some reason, the closet door to the left would slide open with the movement of the ship. While this wasn’t a problem during the day, at night it became an annoyance due to the light coming on automatically every time the door slid open. There was no way to disable this light or to lock the door.

Speaking of lights, the light from the coffee maker and the cordless phone lit the room up like night-lights in the evening. We combated this by covering them to bring down the lighting.

The other item we weren’t pleased with was that the frig wasn’t cooling appropriately. When we brought it to the butler’s attention we were basically ignored. If you’re staying in this cabin I hope that gets fixed for you at some point. It has to, right??!!

While I loved the bathroom with the tub and shower combo. When stepping into and out of the shower hold on, the tub is high and you have to hoist yourself into and out of it, well at least I did and I’m 5’7. The last minor item here is the sink felt a little narrow. So as we splashed water on our faces while leaning over the sink, we often splashed on the floor or the tissues stored just below.

Haven Restaurant – this is a nice addition to this area. It’s a pleasure to have a full service restaurant just outside of your cabin door. This area replaces the use of Cagney’s for breakfast/lunch and expands to include dinner service. The staff here was wonderful, accommodating and for the most part right on top of their game.

Haven Spa – with more space means that there is now room for two private spa treatment rooms right off of the Haven courtyard. There are two dedicated Mandara specialists to assist you with booking and providing the actual service.

Now, here’s where things don’t go so well. Not a deal breaker but one of those annoyances I have to mention. The spa rooms and staff are lovely and what you would expect in the full service spa downstairs. The problem? There are three of them. First, on other ships the space taken by the treatment rooms would have been the steam room.

I’m not a steam room fan so this didn’t bother me but you might find it a minor annoyance. If you do, take heart, the sauna is just across the hall.

The real downside to these rooms is that a) there is no air conditioning b) you can hear ship wide announcements in the room. Loudly. In the middle of your treatment. Just as you are about to doze off. Just as if the person were standing next to you – screaming in your ear and last but not least and the biggest deal to yours truly, c) they had not hooked up the speakers for the ambient music.

That’s right a spa treatment room with no air, loud PA announcements and to top it all off no music. C’mon people you dock in NYC once a week, send someone off the ship to the nearest Best Buy or Radio Shack and come back with two portable ipod speakers (and I mean good ones) and two shuffles. How hard is this really??

Entertainment

As I mentioned there was so much to see and do here that you could really hurt yourself. I couldn’t keep up so pace yourself. If there is something that you really want to do then just go ahead and do while you’re there. You might get distracted by something else and then rush around the ship trying to fit it all in on the last day. Here’s what we were able to do to one extent or another.

Burn the Floor – in giving this review the final once over I realized that I had left this show of the list. How could I? There’s been so much talk about it. I love music and I love to dance. Whether or not I can do the things I saw on stage is up for debate. But that’s the point really, these shows are to give you something to aspire to. I felt the first half of the show did just that. The second part fell a little flat for me, like they had pulled out all of the stops already and it was a long, slow cool down. So, should you see it? If you like Dancing With the Stars, yes go see this show. If you’ve got nothing else to do and are curious, yes go see this show. Just manage your expectations. Or perhaps catch the shortened version in the Manhattan Room. Since we saw the long version in the theatre the first night we never caught the shorter version. I imagine that they would put the best bits on display for the dinner crowd.

Cirque – I’ve put this here and classify it as dinner and a floor show. And what a floor show it was, I loved the show it was entertaining and in the premium seats you are truly right in the heart of things and don’t miss a moment of the goings on. On the down side as others have mentioned, I didn’t love the food. It was prefix with no choices. I’m assuming if you are a vegetarian or had allergies they would make a substitution for you.

The tomato and mozzarella was fine as an app. The steak for me, not so much. It came to the table rare. My beloved was in heaven and ate his steak and mine too. Three people at our table sent their steaks back to have them cooked. Remember this, you come here for the show and not the meal. It’s worth the price for the show.

Howl at the Moon – we popped in here once, and stayed only for a few minutes since we couldn’t get a seat. They seemed like a great team but we never made it back to see them after the first try. No knock on them we just ran out of time.

Fire & Ice – This duet played in the atrium and seemed amazing. We caught the end of their act from O’Sheehan’s one night and caught them in passing as we went through the atrium on our way to other places. They were go check them out. I’d go out of my way to see them if they are on board next time we sail.

Michael Finney – this is the comedy magician that played at the end of the cruise. We caught most of the show but left a little early to make our dinner reservation. I had heard nothing but negative reviews about him from previous posts. I’ll say I had low expectations and didn’t want to go but was talked into it. And surprisingly, he wasn’t that bad. Not a glowing recommendation but much better than I expected. Oh, and be warned that some of his humor is not for the kidlets. While some of it may go over their heads your more savvy kidlets might get the joke.

Rock of Ages – Sigh. I wanted to like this show. I really, really did. NCL has stepped up since earlier comments and have notified parents that this show is not for the young ones. I’m not sure exactly what put me off here. The music was just fine and I grew up listening to a lot of the music. Maybe it was story? Or maybe it was the actors? Actors who had wonderful voices but couldn’t act? Or maybe it was the book?

I don’t know but either way in the first 15 minutes a couple behind us did get up and walk out. I would have been right behind them since it was obvious that the lines the actors were delivering should have earned laughs but they didn’t. But I stayed because I wanted to see if it got any better. And I would have had to climb over my other half to get out and I don’t think he would have let me out. So I stayed. And it did get better. A little bit anyway. It had its true blue fans that had obviously seen the Broadway version. Makes me wonder if that version is just as bad. You be the judge.

Second City – we’d seen a different version of this troupe perform on a previous cruise. However, we decided to give a try anyway. We saw both the 7 and 11 performances on different days. I will admit that I did laugh. Not sure if it was the chocolate martini’s or the comedy…..

Slam Allen – if he is on your sailing, he is not to be missed. We dropped in to see him twice. Don’t go expecting to only hear your blues standards. Will you get those? Yes you will. He also takes other genre’s and makes the songs his own with the arrangements. I say again, not to be missed. No chocolate martini’s needed.

Gaming

Why did we do this to ourselves? Never mind. I’ll speak for myself, why did I feel it necessary to make additional contributions to NCL’s bottom line? The other half did pretty well. Here’s what we did.

BINGO!! – yes I actually won this one. I had to share the prize but I actually won. Primarily we play this game to get the raffle tickets to enter the drawing for a free cruise. My suggestion here is buy one bingo package per couple and play together. You don’t want to fork over any more money than you should.

One note about the Bingo venue. On other ships this would have been in the Spinaker Lounge for each game. Due to space constraints this ends up being traveling bingo. We played in the theatre (2x) and headliners. As a side note if you’re into Deal or No Deal, they end up playing that in the atrium instead of the theatre.

Casino – yes, we played here as well. A word about the smoke. As non-smokers this annoyance ebbed and flowed. At times it was barely noticeable at other times it was unbearable. This would vary with the number of people using the area. Smoke did not seem to waft into the other areas on 6 and 8.

Onto the games themselves, the slots were a little too tight for my liking though my other half did well at the craps table.

The Great Outdoors

This for us was one of those things that we didn’t spend a lot of time doing. Most of our usage took place on day one when we walked around to get our bearings. The Waterfront and the public areas are all nicely done.

We used the basketball court to shoot a few hoops. That’s right, this girl can jump. Swish – nothing but net (most of the time). He used the slides and raved about them. He wanted to do the rope course but didn’t have a chance with everything else that we decided to do.

Parties

We attended a few parties throughout the ship and as you may have guessed by now have a few opinions on the experience.

Bliss – I get what people are saying here about this being a small venue. On other NCL ships the lounge is larger with well, lounge chairs. Enough lounge chairs to accommodate a sizeable group of people. This space does give you the small club feel and the night we were in there we were able to dance and didn’t feel crowded. Granted, this was the first night. We did return for the GLOW after party and it was dead. I can only assume that we’d gotten there too early.

Haven Guest Gathering – this was the usual meet and great with the Captain and members of the senior staff. It was held around the pool and lasted for about an hour. They do provide complementary drinks. A tip here, you can go to the bar and ask for anything you’d like during cocktail hour. You don’t have to stick to the standard red, white and champagne. My only suggestion here is that they move this party to the same night as dress up or not night. We’d gotten dressed up the evening before for this and as freestylers decided not to on this evening, or any other evening for that matter. Very minor.

GLOW – well, I don’t know. I don’t mind change. No really, don’t look at the screen like that. I don’t mind change but really this was just eh. I get that they need to spice it up (pun intended) and do different things but call me a purist on this one. I simply prefer the white hot party. Spice H20 had all sorts of neon colored strips of cloth (think clothes line) along the hallway leading into the area. The décor did leave a bit to be desired. I understand that glow sticks were passed out in the beginning of the party which we missed since we were at dinner. Which leads me to…

Latitudes Party – this was in Spice H20 on the same night as the Glow party and held a few hours prior. Maybe this is what turned me off to the neon strips of cloth along the hallway initially. The Glow party decorations just didn’t seem to flow well for this event. As usual, this was nicely done. Roving libations, and bite sized apps.

80’s Party/Fireworks – so let’s get right to it shall we? If you are claustrophobic, don’t care for crowds and tight spaces, this is NOT the party for you. Search the boards for other suggested viewing areas and watch the fireworks from there. NCL, a word please – It may have seemed like a good idea and I like fireworks as much as the next person. But you may not squeeze 4000 plus people into Spice H20. Nope, it just won’t work.

This would have been more fun with more space. The 80’s music was great, the cruise staff kept the party going (what I could see of it from the doorway). This horse has left the barn, not sure what they can do to improve this.

As to the actual fireworks, they were nice and almost coordinated to the music. There were a number of the displays that were truly beautiful and had the crowd going ooh and ah.

Dining

One quick suggestion, as mentioned earlier some of the tables can be too close together. With all restaurants where you are being seated by a hostess, look around and see if there is a better option than the one being offered to you. Don’t be afraid to ask to change your seat.

Sabrett Hot Dog Cart – this experience was like the one we had with our butler. Elusive and non-existent. The other half got close to a hot dog once but the guy manning the cart told him that it was too early to open. He never did get that hotdog.

Haven Restaurant – a nice addition to the Haven Courtyard.

Garden Café – your standard buffet fare. We ate here once for a late afternoon snack. The food was fine and what you would expect.

Taste/Savor – our only MDR experience was for a lunch early in the cruise. It was fine and what you would expect.

O’Sheehans – this has replaced Blue Lagoon on the other ships. This is a perfect spot for a comfort food snack at all hours of the day. I ended up eating more than my fair share of chicken tenders. I’m told the buffalo wings were very good. Oh and the hot dogs are not the same as what we would have had at the Sabrett cart.

La Cucina – this is a crowd pleaser and a favorite of ours. We always have a good meal here and the portions are generous. At $15 pp, you can’t beat it. I had the shrimp and asparagus risotto, he had the ossobucco and a side of pasta. Both were tasty.

Wasabi – we decided to have a late dinner here. My other half had been reluctant to try sushi on a cruise ship. Our experience was so good at Ocean (see below) that we decided to give this a try. To say I eat sushi is a bit of a misnomer. Actually he eats sushi, if its not cooked then I don’t eat it, just a little quirk of mine. I went with the California and shrimp tempura rolls along with the beef skewers. He had a plate full of raw fish and rice that I can’t recall. Let’s be honest, I really didn’t make note of anything other than he had a plate full of raw food. I do recall that he had three different types of tuna and enjoyed the variety. This is now on our list of casual dining options that won’t break the bank.

Cagney’s – we tried this again after my other half swore that he wouldn’t. On previous trips he didn’t feel that the quality of meat was up to the New York steak houses that we’re used to. Somehow I managed to get him to try it again and he gave it his stamp of approval. He had the wagyu beef sliders to start and the bone-in rib eye and I had the lump crab salad and wagyu beef burger, which was almost as big as his steak and delish.

Le Bistro – now this is one of my favorites. As I mentioned at the top, the experience was almost ruined by the noise in the venue. It’s not large but with the main restaurant doors open allowing the sounds from that area to waft in, the noise from the kitchen which; was right behind us and the general conversation in the restaurant he had our table moved. I’m glad he did. We were moved to a table for two by the window and it was much more manageable.

I have to admit that my dish was just ok, it wasn’t as good as I remembered it. I had the mushroom soup for and app and the signature Shrimp, Scallop, Lobster and brioche dish. There was something missing in the flavor for me of the main course this time around, though the soup was good. He had the escargot and onion soup as an app and the rack of lamb and enjoyed it.

Ocean Blue – my friends, I have saved the best for last. There has been a lot of back and forth on the boards about this venue. I was upset to learn that they had raised the price from $35 to $49 pp. We fortunately reserved in advance and they honored the original price. I have to say that if that hadn’t been the case, I don’t know that we would have tried the restaurant.

This was by far the best restaurant experience on board the ship. From check-in with the hostess until we left at the end of the meal it was impeccable. The experience that we had was on par with some of your better eateries in the city. Each dish arrived with more than one server to assist. It was placed in front of us in unison and each dish explained.

The food was actually very, good. I had the Calamari and Dover sole, he had the grilled prawns and risotto and it was all excellent. Yes, it could have done with some sort of vegetable on the plate. At the very least, there should have been a side dish or two on offer but sadly, there was not. At the end of the meal, I declared that I would do this again even at the $49pp. In fact, it may replace my beloved Le Bistro.

Bermuda

Ah Bermuda. Our first time here and we’d like to go back. Remember I mentioned at the top of this review that we did no research on the island. In spite of our faux pas, we were still able to enjoy ourselves and discover a place that we’d like to revisit.

If you’ve never been to the island before I’d suggest again taking the island tour on your first day. It gives you a good lay of the land as it were and you get some history and a view into where you might like to spend more time. You won’t be disappointed.

Yes, buy the transportation package. You are there for three days and you will at the very least find yourself on the ferry two or three times so that you can explore the island.

On Wednesday’s they have something in Hamilton called the Harbour Nights Festival. Go. A number of the shops are open late, there are street vendors and the food smelled amazing from the different stands. And there is entertainment in front of a few of the locations to boot.

Hamilton appears to be the central business hub of the island. As such there wasn’t much “to do” here. Now don’t forget, I could be wrong about this due to a lack of proper research - except of course shop, ladies! Ahem.

For more cultural fare you should definitely visit St. George’s. A World Heritage Site and once you spend some time there you will see why. Spend the day you won’t regret it.

So why was it a mistake not to have done some research before hand. Well for one really big reason. You’ll notice that I didn’t mention that we visited a beach while on the island. That’s right. We went all the way to Bermuda and didn’t lay out on the beach once. Yes, we’d heard about the beaches and how lovely they were. We even stepped on a few during the island tour. What we didn’t realize is that even with the weather that we had, it never left the mid seventies and you could have used a light sweater at times, especially on the first day – we assumed this wasn’t beach weather and actually it was.

Well, let me tell you. The sun is strong and if you can work with a breezy day then do it. We also didn’t realize that we could have visited a beach on our second day when we thought the weather was better. Some proper research would have clued us in to the fact that St. George’s has a beach called Turtle Bay. The weather was much nicer on the second day and we would have enjoyed laying out for an hour or two at this beach.

We also missed the fact that there is a beach, called Snorkel Park Beach, right there at the wharf. Which, by the by turns into a dance club on certain nights.

No matter. Lessons were learned. We were still able to make use of our balcony and by looking at us you wouldn’t know that we never used the beach.

On our last day in port we did take in the surroundings at the wharf. There’s plenty to do here with shopping, restaurants and museums.

Odds & Ends (Basically Notes to myself and in no particular order)

1. Do your research. And not just on this ship. Take some time to find out what you might like to do on the island as well

2. Having sailed at full capacity, I’d suggest that if you can swing it you go with the Haven. If you can’t and I understand that, go for the largest balcony that you can afford. The Everything Breakaway thread has some good info on the larger balconies. You won’t regret being able to lay out on your own balcony versus jockeying for a chair topside.

3. Our room on this ship was port side. For us that meant that we got early morning sun on the way down and afternoon sun on the way back. While in port we were on the dock side giving us great afternoon sun and a wonderful view of Heritage Wharf

4. Wifi – yes you can purchase wifi access from the local carrier. When you leave the ship, go through the departure area, follow the dock around towards the ferry landing and go into the shop that is shaped like a gazebo. You can purchase your access there. I went with the 3 day - $15 access that was good for only one device. The service is best right at this spot and it was good on the balcony as well. I found it to be spotty around the island but it did the trick helping me stay in touch.

5. iConcierge – we both had this app loaded on our iphones. I used mine more than he did and actually made the Cagney’s reservation with it. He’s more of a paper person and I was fine with the access it gave me. Note that you will not be able to see your reservations for any restaurant or tour on the app

6. The television does provide in room access to see your portfolio and your reservations among other things. Don’t freak if you don’t see a ressie there, for some reason the television does not pick all of them up

7. If you do decide to stay in the Haven, do remember that they give you some sort of afternoon snack. Every. Single. Day. Keep that in mind when having late lunches and then going back and having the snack too. I can say this with confidence, as the weight gain I experienced was not cute. Which does bring me to my next point.

8. The 24 accesses to food is not a challenge. Again, I know from whence I speak – after all, these are notes to myself ☺

9. If you are on the fence about a balcony even if it isn’t a large one, I say do it. It was worth it to see the dolphins playing in our wake on the ride home

10. Based on what I’ve read from others, I would give a brand new ship a few months to work out its kinks before I try it in the future. While we had no major hiccups, it’s nice to know that everything has already been ironed out.

WOW

What an amazing review! Pay attention people, THIS is how do write a review :) Although I wish you would have posted on the main NCL board so it would get more views.

I love the way you write with details and careful observations. You gave the cabin number but what category of suite were you in? I never knew any Breakaway suite that had a shower/tub combo.

I have not been on Breakaway but can relate to noise at Le Bistro on Epic. Le Bistro is a beautiful restaurant but on Epic it is just across from the atrium and there is always someone there with a microphone and some game going on there. It is SO loud in the restaurant. Plus on Epic, the Cirque Dreams show is above and it sounds like people dropping bowling balls on the ceiling above you. I thought it was below the bowling alley but the waitress said it was Cirque Dreams.

Butlers walk a fine line. Some stay away because many will complain the butler was too intrusive when they are not asking for anything. We had a butler like this on our last Epic trip. He was great and delivered what you asked but you never saw him any other time.

BUT we BOTH experienced Lani before. Isnt she great? Our first Epic cruise we had her. She is amazing!!!!! LOVE HER. She is the best!

Welcome home and thanks again for the amazing reivew. A+++++

Bravo!

P.S. What is it about that disappearing hot dog cart? You are not the first to mention how hard it is to find it and open for business.

Thank you so much. Wonderful review. I am staying in the Haven for the first time in July.

You are not the first person to say that the butler was nonexistent.

I am happy that you had a great time.

Thanks again for taking the time to write such a great review.

Hi David,

Thanks so much for reading my review and the kind words. I've just placed this on the main board too, I want to be as helpful to as many as possible.

I absolutely love Lani!! I would just ask for her the next time.

We were in an S5, this time around.

And I have to say that I was very surprised by the noise in most of the up charge restaurants. It's something about how they've been arranged, so that once you get a large party or two in there a quiet conversation is out of the question.

Thanks again for reading, the kind comments and for the suggestion to post on the main board.

Hi there, I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I was just saying to David that I'd request Lani next time. Give a call to the concierge desk and see if it's possible to have her assigned to your room. She is super helpful and very nice.

Enjoy your cruise!

You can request a particular butler????? First time in a suite, so please pardon my ignorance...:)

Thanks for posting your review - just the type of information I was looking for. I do have one question that I haven't seem to been able to find - that is a review of the bar in the Haven area. On Epic, we spent a lot of outdoor time at the Posh bar, but that isn't available on Breakaway. Is there seating near the Haven bar/lounge that is also outside?

Everything Breakaway Review – May 26, 2013 Sailing

Great review! We were on your sailing and were in an S4 2-bedroom villa just a few doors down (16112). Haven't had time to do my review yet, but I did want to jump in to say that we were "Lucky" to have the same butler you did, but it sounds like our impression is a little different. This was our sixth suite with NCL and we've had mostly good experiences with our butlers, but their styles certainly can vary. On this cruise, we thought our butler was the best we've ever had. Building on our experiences on past cruises as well as suggestions here on Cruise Critic, we talked with him for a while on the first day.... chit chat, introductions, and some requests regarding snacks, drinks, etc. Very friendly right from the start. Then, as the cruise progressed, we'd chat some more and there were a few more requests (like slices of Banana Cream Pie from the Haven Restaurant's lunch menu when we would come back late afternoon from exploring Bermuda!). We were constantly impressed at how quickly, consistently, and well things were done. Sometimes we would only be gone for a few minutes and he would sneak in and take our dirty plates away and restock the glassware, etc. for the Lavazza machine. Another example: we had requested some iced tea for the fridge on the first day, and every day after that, we got a new pitcher of iced tea - and we're convinced he was really brewing the tea instead of using the tea mix product they serve elsewhere on the ship (and we certainly did not ask him to go to that trouble; he just did it, and it was much better!). We tipped even more than what we usually do because we were so pleased with the service he provided. Anyway, I just didn't want people who get him as their butler to think "oh no" from the start, because this just shows that experiences with the same person can be different.

Agree with so much of your review (maybe that will save me from having to write my own!). :D

I did really enjoy Rock of Ages though....

And about hot dogs, we had one in O'Sheehans, late one night and I have to say it was one of the best hot dogs I've ever had (and I've had my share of them). Totally wasn't expecting it. Granted, I had had a drink or two, but I don't think that was influencing my taste buds because a friend who went with us and doesn't drink also said the same thing. The bun was soft, warm and toasted and the dog was hot, plump, and grilled. It was simply delicious (that "chili" they served on the side is a different story). We also found the hot dog cart open on the Waterfront on the last day.... that dog was ok at best... very subpar when compared to the O'Sheehan's late night hot dog.

:)

I've seen on the boards posts where others have asked for a particular butler and the request was granted. Now we just happen to prefer Lani's style better you might the other butler's approach, if that's who you end up with.

The key is to ask for what you want and I'm sure your butler will be accommodating :)

You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful. The bar is in the lounge area right outside of the restaurant. They didn't have an outdoor bar. However, we did see wait staff out and about to accommodate drink requests.

Hi KJE!! We probably passed each other so many times and didn't realize it. We were signed up for the meet and greet but got distracted and showed up very near the end so we didn't really have a chance to meet anyone. Next time!

I'm so glad that you were "Lucky" enough to have a different experience. Our previous butlers were just so outgoing that we got used to that style and approach. Thanks for letting us know how you worked with him so that if we get him or anyone like him in the future we'll know how to handle the situation and ensure a better experience.

As to the hot dog my other half says and I quote, "I never got a chance to taste the NCL Sabrett but with the NYC Sabrett dirty water dogs to compare to, O'Sheehan's wasn't that good.....but it could be a matter of personal taste."

I hope that you decide to write your review, I like to see how other people experience the same situation - like the butler :)

Great review! I was on your sailing, and agree with you on so many points. We also did not do any proper research before our sailing. Sure, I scoured the Internet for any detail I could find about the Breakaway, but we too went to Bermuda and wandered blindly. We too did not see a beach. I'm glad to know that we are in good company, haha!!!

And yes, food is very subjective. I'm not from New York and to be honest, have never understood the fascination with the dirty water dogs served from a street cart - even though we are always compelled to get one when visiting because that's what you do when you're in New York! My friends in New York, however, swear by them. :)

What a great review. After reading yours and trying to finish Gambees I should be well prepared for our Sept 1st sailing. You mentioned the island tour. Did you schedule on board or aafter you reached the island. Also, did you notice whether any oif the venues had and news or sports on t.v. (espn, etc.). Thanks again, your review was to the point and very informative. Sam in Kentucky

Thank you so much for your review. I really enjoyed your in depth take on different aspects. We will be boarding in just over 2 weeks and we have an S6 aft penthouse.

I am looking for information on the Haven Restaurant for breakfast/lunch/dinner times. It isn't listed in the dailies and most reviews don't mention anything. I know the MDRs serve breakfast only until 9 am...is this true with the Haven Restaurant as well? Also, does the Restaurant follow the same MDR menu for dinner...just served in the Haven as opposed to the MDR? Is there as long of a queue for dinner in the Haven Restaurant as I've heard there is in the MDR? I would really appreciate any insight you have on this.

I'm just going on the assumption that the Haven Restaurant breakfast & lunch menus are similar, if not the same, as Cagney's B&L menus on the other ships. Can you confirm?

I'm looking forward to enjoying many (Cagney's style) breakfasts and lunches on my very large balcony, I would hope that butler service is up to par, as that is one of the main "perks" I look forward to when booking a suite. It is disheartening to hear about any subpar butler service. I could have taken 4 weeks of cruises in a Gem Balcony for the price we are paying for this one week of suite pampering. I hope the service reflects that! :::end rant::: sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent! :D

Hi Sam,

The only thing we did in advance when it came to Bermuda was to book the island tour :) We did this through NCL, though after reading Gambee's post it looks like you may be able to do this locally once you arrive (and cheaper).

As I recall, the Frog and Onion at the wharf had a number of t.v.'s all showing a soccer game. We also ate at the Bone Fish but outside, so I'm not sure if they had a t.v. inside.

I'm glad you found the review helpful. Enjoy your cruise!

Hi Michele,

I've just asked my other half to go off in search of the sheet that they give you in your room when you arrive that has your butlers name and the restaurant hours.

As I was writing this, he came through for us!. Thanks Honey!

Breakfast Sea Days 7:30 - 10:30

Port Days 7:00 - 10:00

New York Arrival 6:30 - 9:30

Lunch 12:00 - 2:00

Dinner 5:30 - 10:00

Our last cruise was on the Jewel in December and the menu seemed very familiar to the meals we had there. At some point in our crazy research phase someone had posted the menu for the Haven restaurant on the boards. I do have a copy of that but couldn't find the link to it, see below for the menu.

We never really had a wait for the Haven restaurant. At times it was full but there were always tables and it seemed to have a decent turnover rate. Also I'm sure a number of guests went with the specialty dining options around the ship.

I'm glad to know that I'm not alone on the price gouging that they put us through for this trip. I took to saying to my other half, save those nickels and dimes we'll need them for the trip :)

I think should you end up with a butler like we had and you follow KJE's advise at the beginning of the trip and set expectations you guys will be fine.

Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks for a great review! I am also type "A" researching our cruise, I will try to focus more on Bermuda now that I have read so much about the ship.

Hi Debbie,

You won't regret doing the Bermuda research. While we still managed to have a really good time without it, it would have been nice to have been better prepared.

Enjoy your cruise!

Again, many thanks! You told me everything I wanted to know and more! We do enjoy some of the specialty restaurants, but I would prefer to forgo the nasty lines on the MDR for most, if not all, of our trip. Glad to know the Haven Restaurant serves the surf & turf on the first night. That saves me first day aggravation of waiting in line at the MDR. We are looking forward to LeBistro and some of the waterfront dining options as well. The B&L menu seems to be identical to the Cagney's menus on the other ships.

I'm glad I have done a little research on Bermuda, as this is our first trip there. However, I did the same as you, and the majority of my information is strictly about the Breakaway. We are going to purchase the ferry/bus 2-day pass, spend one day in and around Hamilton, then one day in/around St. George and the last day at the dockyard...we will scope out all the beaches in those sections of the island as well...I don't want to miss those! ;) But we've yet to book a single excursion! I just hope enough of what I've researched "sticks", it has been several months of "Information Overload" here. And, BTW, I saw those haven menus somewhere here as well. Alas, I fear they are buried in the thousands of posts on the "Everything Breakaway" thread, and lost forever! :p

I am going with yours/KJEAtlanta's advice, and I will be upfront with my expectations from the service staff. Thank you again, for giving me all the answers I needed!!

:)

can I ask how many people stay in your 2 bedroom suite, we have six people in our family two adults and four kids, it this suite big enough. we really want to try the suite - can you post your pictures of your suite?
