RobertGraves Posted September 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Dear Mr. Payne, Please accept my thanks, too, for designing QM2. I would like to ask you if she will be able to cross the new Panama Canal. Does she fit under the Bridge of Americas?
Stephen M. Payne Posted September 25, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2013 Robert, Queen Mary 2 will certainly be able to transverse the canal through the new locks. With an air-draught of 62 metres she will easily fit under The Bridge of the Americas which is 117 metres above the water level. Thank you for your question. Stephen M. Payne Posted September 25, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 25, 2013 All, I looked up the bridge height on the internet before responding but my source may be incorrect. Without delving too deeply into things, the air draught of Queen Mary 2 is 62 metres, so allowing a 3 metre margin as required in NY, a clear height of 65 metres would be required for transit.
