Galveston budget hotel

I'm looking to stay as close to the port in Galveston as possible without spending a ton of money. Being close to the port in a plus, so is being able to leave our car there for the week as well.

 

Are there any decent places that will let you stay for only one night? Would we be better staying in Houston instead?

Galveston is not a large island. There are only two hotels near the port: Tremont Hotel and Harbor House.

There is a Motel 6, Days Inn, Candlewood Suites, Budget Inn, Econo Lodge and Howard Johnson that could possibly be on the low end of a budget.

 

The port is no more than 10 minutes from hotels/motels.

we got a good rate at the Quality Inn and Suites which also has good reviews at Trip Advisor -- nothing fancy. In doing my search, I found rates are highly variable with seasonality, scheduled events on the island and in direct reflection of subsequent supply/demand balance. So some posters will indicate a great rate that is simply not there for the dates you want and you can't control that. For example, having started by saying we got a great rate at the Quality Inn, I booked 10-12 months ago. That same hotel is now quoting rates twice what we are paying for the same dates. If there are no good rates, you may want to go the Hotwire or Priceline route and see if you can't save that way.
