From what I remember, you have to find a phone booth to use a calling card. Don't know if you can call from the cabin, even if you do, those calls are $7-8 a minute, not pennies like on land.

Is there an 800 number on the card? Can you call them and ask?

I think the easiest/cheapest would be to find an internet place and use email. This would depend on the country.

There are always pay phones in every port. These are there so crew members can call home.

If you call from the ship when its not in a port, you will be charged for using the ship's cell phone tower. A cruise buddy makes free calls on her AT&T phone when in ports.

In recent years Skype has become the preferred method of (free) calling for many of the crew. You can always tell where the free wifi is in port by where there are crew with laptops or tablets and earbuds.

If you are sailing Carnival, they have lowered their ship-to-shore phone calls to $1.99/min.
