Key West Snorkeling - From Shore? or only by boat?

We are stopping in Key West on the Rhapsody in three weeks. Does anyone know if there is any good snorkeling accessible on our own from shore, or are we limited to paying an outfitter to take us to a reef by boat? Thanks for the help.

You can snorkel from shore at FT Zachary Taylor beach but I think you will be disappointed unless you get out to the reef. I suspect you can save some money by booking it independent of the cruise ship....check out KeyWest.com. I think the 1/2 day cruises on the Sebago are the best value, smaller catamaran but big enough that the price isn't overwhelming like it is if you are on a really small boat.

Thanks Clay, I appreciate the input. Since we will be diving in Grand Cayman and Cozumel, I think we have decided to meander around Key West and catch Mallory Square at Sunset.
