Vancouver train to hotel recommends

Recommended Posts

What's your budget? Also assuming that you're embarking at Canada Place.

The train station is on the edge of Chinatown and just outside the downtown core. It's a tad sketchy in the area but not dangerous IMO. A taxi should be pretty cheap to a downtown hotel (<10mins away). You can also try Skytraining it with the downtown stops two to four stations away. The Skytrain station is a block away from the train terminal.

There are no hotels close to the train station that anyone on here would recommend so you will need to take a short Skytrain - our rapid transit system - or taxi ride to the heart of the downtown core.

Our downtown core is very compact and depending on your hotel you may be able to walk to the terminal - as long as you are sailing from Canada Place and not Ballantyne Pier - only used for a couple of sailings in May - it is about $10.00 taxi fare.

Once you have selected your hotel us locals will be happy to give you more detailed instructions on getting to the port.

Hope this helps

Cheers!

Dennis

Hotwire gave us the Century Plaza hotel and Spa in downtown Vancouver. Any idea the most efficient way to get to hotel from YVR? Wondering if train to hotel is within walking distance. Thanks for any assistence.

Wrong kind of train for this thread - OP is talking about the Amtrak system, totally separate from our local light rail. Don't ask any cabbies to take you to 'the train station' as they will probably think Amtrak too...

'Skytrain' is our local subway/elevated rail system, and that's what you want to get to your hotel - well, it's either that or a cab (<$40, metered) or limo (fixed price, $65+ depending on size of vehicle).

Nearest Skytrain station to Century Plaza is City Centre - that's about 900 yards away from the hotel, and is on the correct line (the Canada Line) which comes in from the airport. This is the Google transit map link to this route.

There are a couple of buses that can get you closer, but our buses are not set up to handle large suitcases - if you're arriving at a quiet time of day you can probably get away with it, but anywhere in peak hours you'll cause great inconvenience to other bus users so please don't try!

If you don't feel like schlepping your suitcases, plenty of taxis will pass by the City Centre station exits for you to flag down - to your hotel, expect to pay under $10.

If you do not plan to use transit at all while staying in Vancouver a taxi may be the sweet-spot of time/money/hassle for this hotel - but if you can handle your cases on foot for the walk from Skytrain, you'll still save money even if you have to pay the full whack for a one-off peak transit ticket with airport surcharge ($9 per person). If you are going to use transit, there are multiple-use tickets that avoid the surcharge making transit even better value...

The non-concession fare on the Canada Line from YVR to Vancouver Centre station is $9 per person. A cab ride from YVR to a downtown hotel will run about $35 plus tip. For what it is worth, I have never had much success flagging a cab in downtown Vancouver and I was officedin Vancouver Centre for many years.

We are flying in to Vancouver and staying at the Marriott Pinnacle for 1 night before a cruise. Urban Trekker can you tell me how to take train or cheapest transportation to this hotel. Can we walk from that hotel to Canada Place to leave on Holland America the next day? Also how do we get from the Marriott to Granville? We get into Vancouver 11am on May 24. What should we do there?

From the airport, take the Skytrain Canada Line all the way to Waterfront, then exit the platform using the exit marked "WAY OUT - Granville St" (right on the platform, don't go down the tunnel to exit). That puts you at Granville ST @ W.Hastings. Turn left onto W.Hastings and your hotel is a 4 block walk.

From The Marriott to Canada Place Cruise terminal is a slightly shorter walk and frankly you cant miss it, at the corner from your hotel turn left and head toward the water...

Thank you for the directions. What should we do in Vancouver? We want an overview of the city and some main points to see in a day and a half.

Apologies in advance if this sounds snarky, but I (and I imagine most if not all of the other local posters) know nothing about you & your traveling companions - without a few hints as to what you tend to enjoy asking for the best things to see in such a short visit is basically total guesswork!

Indoor/outdoor? Love walking/have restricted mobility? Art/culture/history buffs? Foodies? Love flowers/allergic to pollen? Tight budget/sky's the limit?

Give us a few hints and we'll pay you back in spades!!!

I would be inclined to take a trip over to the North Shore and take in the Capilano Suspension Bridge and then the Grouse Mountain Skyride (the Skyride should not be taken if it is not a nice day, it rather a waste of money in the rain). You may also want to go down to Stanley Park on that half day.

For the full day, if you want to hit the highlights of the city then I am a huge fan of HOHOs and recommend the Vancouver Trolley for its live narration. incidentally, the Vancouver Trolley will be offering a HOHO within Stanley Park this summer, they have offered this in the past but something came up last year and they cancelled the tour.
