You can. In fact, airlines never stopped you from storing them in checked luggage. Only as "carry-on items." Lastly, you can now include small nail clippers as airline "carry-ons"

One of my cruise buddies had a pair of scissors in her checked luggage. It was a regular pair that you cut material with. She was called down to the pursers desk and asked to open her luggage. So, I wouldn't take any pointy scissors or knives in my luggage.
