canuck059 Posted June 24, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 24, 2014 We walked to the Castello district (the old walled city) from the port in about 10-15 minutes. There we wandered around and saw Bastione de San Remy, Torre dell'Elefante and Torre de San Pancrazio. Lots of narrow streets and wonderful views. Don't miss Santa Maria Cathedral (especially the Sanctuary of the Martyrs in the crypt) which opened at 10am when we were there. Next to the cathedral is the royal palace which free to enter and you can view some rooms upstairs. From there, we took a city bus (€1.70) to Mount Urpini and walked uphill through the park to overlook the Molentargius - Saline Nature Park on one side and the city of Cagliari on the other. We then walked back down and caught another city bus back to the port. Susan

swixpat Posted June 25, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 25, 2014 We've just been to Pula a small town south of Cagliari. I would rent a car even for this short period you're there. Cagliari is fairly industrial with large oil port and refineries. 20 min south along the coast and you'll be on a different island. When we were there end of May it was green and lush because they had lots of rain this spring. It csn get brown and dry. On the southern outskirt of Cagliari you'll find large colonies of pink flamingoes, apparently the only colonies in Europe besides the Camargue in southern France.
