There is only about a 7.5% chance that the dealer is holding a 9 giving him that 17. But there is a 37.5% chance dealer has paint or Ace, and you've just lost. There is also another 15% chance the dealer has 2 or 3 in the hole... and now you lose to 8, 9 or paint. So more than half the cards in the deck (52.5%) either beat you or put you in serious trouble. And this is why you hit soft 17 on dealer 8. Stand on soft 17 only when dealer shows 7 or less. Never, ever, ever stand on a soft 17! You will either hit it or double it, depending on the situation.
