Port Everglades - Post cruise rental car

Our flight home after our cruise isn't until late afternoon and the misses and I don't want to sit at the airport for 4-6 hours twiddling our thumbs so we thought we would rent a car and waste a little time with local site-seeing and a nice seafood lunch before heading back to the (expletive) midwest.

 

My question is, we know there are no rental car places at the terminal, so do we need to take a taxi back to the airport to pick up a rental car or are there rental car locations elsewhere that might be closer an/or easier?

Most of the major car companies have locations near the port and outside of the airport. Look at locations on SE 17th St, Miami Rd, SE 24th St, and S. Federal Hwy. The airport is so close that the taxi fare isn't much different, but you might save on facilities charges.
