Best area for calm snorkeling

I am looking for the best area for first time snorkelers - maybe just from a beach where we can rent some snorkel equipment - or do we have to do a tour? One of the tours in open waters we were going to do - all the reviews said people were getting seasick because the water was so rough - I definitely don't want to get sick. Any help??

I'm a first time snorkeler too and I leave on the Carnival Freedom on November 15, 2014. In researching snorkeling, I opted NOT to book a ship excursion and instead am taking a cab to Melia and buying a day pass. Many of the reviews I read mentioned snorkeling at a reef about 100 yards out from the beach. On one review, the manager of the resort even replied to the review reiterating that they appreciated the positive feedback and that they agree there is good snorkeling to be had at the reef nearby.

Nassau doesn't seem to be a great snorkeling place, and of all the things I've read and reviewed, it seems like Melia is worth a shot (and it's super affordable). Just a 15 minute cab ride from Port.
