You might be better off posting this on the South American board, but there were several fairly decent shops right at the pier (a friend of mine actually bought some wonderful gold/emerald earrings there), but not much within walking distance. Taxis are very cheap, though, and will gladly wait for you as you shop. The fort is a must see. What we did was to take Princess' tour of the city, and then we took a taxi back to the boat from the shopping center to which they take you on the tour.

It's been a few years since we were there. However, the dock had one of the best areas for shopping... not large, but very nice and well maintained. They also had a great loading area directly adjacent for vans, taxi's etc to take you into town. We thouroughly enjoyed this port... still remains one of our favorites.
