Hotels in Valparasio, Chile

Hi....we'll be taking a trip from Valparasia, Chile back to Florida in March of 2016. I'm thinking we'll need to get to Chile at least 1-2 days before we sail and wonder if any one can recommend a nice (not too pricy) place that might be near the port? Any suggestions and reviews are welcome. Thanks! :)

Santiago is an interesting city. I'd stay there pre-cruise and then take a day trip through wine country to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. We used ChileAbout for our Valparaiso to Santiago transfer and we would recommend them. Small van with driver and bilingual tour guide.

If you can arrange enough pre-cruise days, I concur with the recommendation to spend a few days in Santiago and then transfer to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar (via a wine-tasting tour if that is of interest). We ultimately spent much longer in Santiago than originally planned because we had to cancel a side trip, and we found that there was lots to see and do in Santiago for several days. However, Valparaiso is also scenic and interesting (in different ways), and we recommend at least one night (and preferably two) in Valpo.

We stayed at the Orly Hotel in the Providencia District of Santiago (we were very happy there) and, for just one night, at the Sheraton in Vina del Mar. If we return to Santiago, we would return to the Orly Hotel or the associated apartments. If we return to the Vina/Valpo area, we would look for a hotel in Valpo next time. We used AboutChile for tours and transfers, and were happy with them.

We've just returned from our second South American cruise. We arrived in Santiago on March 13th and boarded the ship in Valparaiso on March 15th. We hired a guide to pick us up at the airport, give us a full-day tour of Isla Negra, the Casablanca Valley and Viña del Mar before dropping us off at our B&B in Valparaiso. Since Valparaiso is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we decided to hire a guide to give us a walking tour the next day. (Fantastic!) The 3rd morning we had a leisurely breakfast before a painless 10-minute transfer to the cruise terminal around 11AM.

If you choose to stay in the Valparaiso/Viña del Mar area you will have quite a bit of variety. There are several large international hotels (with large, international prices) in Viña del Mar and there are also some small hotels and B&Bs in Valparaiso itself. We stayed at Hostal Morgan, a small B&B in the Cerro Alegre area. It was a great area with plenty of restaurants and clubs (and plenty of hustle and bustle at 2 AM). Our hostess was a very gracious lady who spoke excellent English. The room itself cost $80-$90/night, depending on the exchange rate. When we booked the reservation (almost a year in advance), María mentioned that she was almost fully booked.

A few years ago when in Valparaiso we stayed for 2 nights at Harrison B & B, which was a very short taxi ride to the port, and I think we paid about $100 USD per night, which included breakfast. Only problem was you had to take your luggage up the stairs as there are no elevators, unless you are lucky to get a room on the main floor. Rooms were newly renovated and spacious.

Another suggestion would be Manoir Atkinson. I think they were a bit higher in price. Also in a great location.

You have to watch your step in Valparaiso as I don't think they have the poop and scoop method we have in North America, and there are a fair number of dogs around.

We loved Valparaiso very much and used Michael the Pirate for our walking tour around Valparaiso and also to take us up to Portillo Ski resort and the Andes mountain range up as far as the Chilean border. Great trip. We also hired him to take us in his small car to Vina Del Mar and many beautiful beaches and wineries on the way to Santiago.

... About how far is Santiago from Valparaiso?

When we did it, it was about a 1.75-hr drive (without stops) from Vina to Santiago (Providencia district). Providencia is a few minutes' drive "beyond" (east of) the old centre of Santiago. It would be about the same from Valpo to the centre of Santiago.

Conversely, on a later day, we spent 6 hours returning from Santiago to Vina, stopping at two wineries plus a separate (quick) lunch stop.

We stayed at the Ibis Valparaiso on March 14 before our Celebrity Infinity cruise. Very good rates (about $60 Canadian) $7 for breakfast.. Room was larger than European Ibis and window can be opened. It is right at a metro stop and there are shops including a large supermarket. Metro can be taken to cruise terminal and there are no steps.

We know someone else who stays here when he visits..sounds very promising and thanks for the info about the metro and getting to the cruise terminal..this will be very helpful!

Hi, we're on the same itinerary, I think - Celebrity Infinity departing March 13th.

I booked the Da Vinci hotel, which was quite reasonable ($170 for two nights) and only 4 kms from the cruise terminal.
