pilot04 Posted April 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted April 4, 2015 Hi, I was wondering if there were large markets(with variety of fruits) near the Progreso pier within walking distance to explore while we're in port in a few weeks.
clackey Posted April 5, 2015 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2015 There is a covered market across the street tron the straw market where the shuttle drops you. I don't remember fruits but there is a meat and fish market so there should be fruit close by. I saw a woman on the sidewalk selling peeled oranges . WisRiver Posted April 5, 2015 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2015 The Mercado Central is across the street from the lighthouse on Calle 78. From the outside it does not look like a market, since there are lots of small shops selling shoes, clothes and DVD's. If you enter on the northwest side, near the fruit juice stand, you will come to the fresh food vendors. The fruit juice stand not only makes great juice, but lots of juice blends The vendors usually close about 1 PM. As you explore the market, there is a separate area that has the "wet" market (meaning they have running water to maintain sanitary conditions) selling meat and fish. There are also lots of small stands selling various local prepared foods at inexpensive prices. Little English is spoken, but menus are posted. If you want fresh deep fried fish, this is the place. pilot04 Posted April 5, 2015 Author #4 Share Posted April 5, 2015 Thanks for the suggestions and I'll try to explore the markets if we don't do excursions in Progreso.
