We would like to go to a beach plus a visit to something else idiosyncratic to Tortola. Any suggestions?

That term has so many meanings! I assume you're seeking something unique to Tortola and not something bizarre or strange? That would be the Baths which are located on VIrgin Gorda. The Baths are a formation of massive granite boulders strewn about as if by a giant. You'll find a ton of threads on that topic. Nearby Devils Bay and Spring Bay are nice beaches.
