best car route to southampton

Leaving Southampton on Friday 22nd April on Ovation coming down the M3.Is it better to go the long route via M27 then M271 or go the direct route through town via The Avenue.Thanks for any information

I always go via motorway rather than through the city.

 

I will be driving that route on the 22/4 also.

I find both routes can be a nightmare, definitely keep away from rush hour.

 

We are on the Ovation on the 22nd but driving down the day before and staying in a hotel. Heard of too many bad experiences driving down the same day.

We are only a one hour drive from Southampton so don't stay the night before. However, we always allow at least 1.5 hours to reach the dock as the traffic is so busy. We never go through town though, always the signposted route from M271.

Maybe we should try straight through town. ;)
