Wondering how to get from cruise port to place we can buy Valparetto tix that are good for 1-2 days. What is the most efficient way to do this? Do we take People Mover to the city center? Or to one of the transportation plazas? How do we get People Mover if this is the best way?

Thanks

You should plan to take the People Mover to Piazzale Roma. (The People Mover doesn't have a lot of options so it's not confusing. There is only one line with three stops. Just be sure you are going in the direction of Piazzale Roma and not to the parking garage (in the opposite direction).

Once you are at Piazzale Roma, there is a major vaporetto stop where you can buy the passes for various periods of time. And of course, it's also the place where you board the vaporettos.

Here is a good reference on using the People Mover:

I suggest you explore the website as there is a lot of other good information on using the vaporetti also.

We would add to Cruisemom's excellent info..that when you get to the Piazale Roma...the vaporetto piers (and business office) are across the square (after your exit the People Mover building) in the direction of the Grand Canal. Look for the "ACTV" sign which is the name of the company that operates the Vaporettos. Or just ask anyone to point you in the direction of the vaporettos. Once you get to the ACTV Office you have some options. You can purchase tickets, outside, from the vending machines (they take cash or chip credit cards). The vending machines do have instructions in multiple languages including English (usually indicated by a British flag). If you do not want to use the vending machines there are a few ticket windows (outside the ACTV building) where you can buy your tickets from a human. Or, if you want to be a masochist you can go inside the office where there are more ticket windows and usually long lines. Even the ticket vending machines will sell you a 24,48 72 hour pass (or single tickets). The first time you use the ticket (a small card) you simply swipe it over the card reader (at the entrance of all vaporetto piers) and you will get a Green Light indicating the card is valid.

When you exit the terminal there will be a free shuttle that takes you to the people mover.

The people mover is across the street and costs $1.50eu which you buy from a machine. Make sure you get on the tram headed for Venice.

When you exit the people mover, walk to the end of the block and turn left.

There is an ACTV store front that sells tickets to all buses and vaporettos.

A 24 hour pass is $20eu and a 48 hour pass is $30eu.

It the easiest way to get around as Venice is tough to navigate with all its dead ends for a tourist.

We would just add an "editorial" comment about vaporettos and Venice. Vaporettos are a great way to go around the outside of the island of Venice or across the Lagoon and canals to the other islands (Lido, Murano, Burano, Torcello, etc). But (the big but) the only way to truly see a lot of Venice is on your feet. Many tourists have seen little of Venice because they limit themselves to the outside areas (like St Marks Square, Rialto Bridge, etc) and never walk within the interior (not served by vaporettos). For example, DW and I like to stroll near the university and stop at a cafe that has more students then tourists (and has student prices). Folks talk about visiting the Jewish Ghetto....but you can only do that on your feet as the closest vaporetto stop is blocks distant. Of if you want to explore Lido..you can get there on a vaporetto...but need to walk (or use the island bus) to see the beaches and what the island has to offer.

We got on the #1 vaporetto (slow boat) in Piazzale Roma and used the Rick Steves grand canal audio guide to St. Marks Square. It worked great! It was easy to follow as it told you when to start and stop the guide at each stop. So we got a nice tour while being transported to St Mark's Square!
