Renting a car in Spain

There is normally no problem in taking cars cross border between EU countries. The insurance is valid between the countries, but some car hire companies charge extra. You would need to inform them you are taking it.

I presume you are returning the car to Barcelona, otherwise it would be more sensible to take the bus or train into France and hire one there, otherwise it will cost a lot more to pick up the car in one destination and return to another.

Don't attempt to do it without checking/informing the rental company. If you have an accident or the car is stolen you'd be looking at a lot of money to pay.

As above, if looking at a one way rental it'll be expensive, unlike the US where it can be relatively inexpensive.
