Short tour: Cable car and/or baseball?

Considering a cruise that stops in Amber Cove. I love to tour new places, but this cruise will be a reward for my son, so I'm tailoring it to what he prefers, which is mostly swimming and eating. :D

I'd like to see a little bit of the country without taking an all-day tour. A few hours at most. We will have more than enough beach time at other stops and I hate to shop, but we want time at the Amber Cove cruise port pool.

Maybe going up into the mountains and riding the cable car, and/or possibly seeing a little of the town and a baseball field. As a big sports fan, he associates the Dominican Republic with baseball. He's also not opposed to learning a little history, and of course we're huge Jurassic Park fans.

I love local, private tour companies that provide a more personal tour for less $$ than the cruise excursions. I also like using local buses, but not if it's going to take a lot more time. Recommendations?
