Early Boarding

We've got five cabins booked for the 2/5 sailing of the Mediterranea. One couple has a Grand Suite and an 11:00 a.m. boarding time. The rest of us have the standard 1:00 p.m. I called Costa and they said we could not board with any earlier. Feedback please? Can we actually board earlier? Also read in some posting something about obtained a number when arriving at the port, I don't recall doing that last time. Last question, what's the chance of getting an upgrade (currently in a veranda room) at check-in? I know Panorama Suites are still available as of yesterday but I'm not willing to pay another $1,700 to get one.
