Whale watching excursions

Funny: Hubs and I rarely book princess excursions anymore. Play it by ear and see how it goes.

Once during a CA coastal, we decided to go to the museum, then noticed the whale watching tours and decided to book. While waiting for the HUNDREDS of princess pax disembarking, I checked the price through princess. OH BOY, was I amazed at the markup. Through princess, $129 per person, directly through the company, $26. Don't get me wrong, princess included transportation, while ours didn't. But for $208 difference, uber was definitely a bargain! And a fancy lunch and souvies.

The boat had maybe 30 people on it, we could move around wherever we wanted. A crew member stated that the last tour (the princess booked one) had so many people, there weren't extra seats if someone wanted to be somewhere else. Basically, where you landed was where you stayed.

I want to repeat this post to remind people about whale watching on the California Central Coast. We spend some time there every July to escape the 100°+ heat at our home and often see whales from the shore. There are a lot of whale watching boat excursions to choose from.

Are you looking to see a specific type of whale?

I have had great whale watching in Juneau, but also bad whale watching in Juneau. Same with Sitka.

My best consistent whale watching experiences have been in Victoria, BC (or Anacortes, WA).

Best experience was the one and only time I went out of Roche Harbor, San Jan Island, Washington-but that is not Alaska or a port on an Alaskan cruise.

I have going whale watching other places as well, and I would highly recommend Maui in January or February.

Happy to answer any questions you might have.
