If you want the full guided lodge experience have a look at https://www.tongarirolodge.co.nz about 3 hours drive (in a rental car) from Auckland - I have done this and the Accomodation, food and Trout fishing is fantastic (I am assuming you want Freshwater). kittysJ30 Posted September 2, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted September 2, 2018 We took your advice and booked the Anglers package at Tongariro Lodge for three nights. A definite bucket list item. Thanks for the tip.
kittysJ30 Posted October 29, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted October 29, 2018 The Tongariro Lodge is a delight to work with. Thank you for the suggestion.
Rob99 Posted October 29, 2018 #5 Share Posted October 29, 2018 Fantastic - I am sure you will enjoy this trip, hopefully a 10 pounder is in your future (you will hopefully be surprised at the average size of the fish you will catch). A Couple of Tips Some of the area is "big water" so practicing distance casting before will greatly improve your chances of a trophy. While your guide will probably discourage it, it is perfectly ok to take 1 fish and request the Lodge to prepare it as a starter - their freshly smoked sweet chilli trout with water crackers is amazing (Note you can not buy Trout in NZ - if you don't catch it you don't eat it!!) The 2 - 4 bedroom rooms are small houses with a full kitchen - if you need a break from "restaurant" food after your cruise their is a great "New World" supermarket 5 mins down the road. Great for NZ Cheeses and local Wines to enjoy on the deck in the evenings beside the river. A really good insect repellent is a must (look for "contains Deet") - while we have no snakes or things that will kill you, some of our bugs have been known to cary off small children 🙂 Enjoy your Trip Rob
