Kushiro City, Japan Do it yourself excursion

Next month the cruise I am taking has a port of call in Kushiro City, Japan. I am interested in going to the Crane reserve and would like to spend more time there than the cruise exursion allows. Has anyone taken public transportation there? I am open to any other places to go utilizing public transportation. We are in port from 7am to 5pm
