Satellite phone service

Has anyone used a satelitte phone on the southern caribbean cruise? I am trying to research the difference in reception and cost via using the cruise line phone. I am in need of contecting to the States on a daily bases.

We were Adventure back in January and a couple at our dinner table had a sat. phone and it worked great. He was able to make calls from any where.

Thanks for your input. I think this is my biggest dilemma about being out at sea for two days.

I rented a sat phone last cruise (Jan '05) and it worked great as long as you had a direct view of the sky. We used in on upper pool deck, as well as, from our cabin balcony with great reception. They're a little big to lug around, but if you only plan on sending calls you can just take it out when you need it. I think the week cost us about $150 including shipping the phone to us and the return shipment to the rental company.
